2024 Honda CR-V vs. Toyota RAV4

It’s not easy to choose a new SUV with so many outstanding options available. There isn’t a magic solution to find the best one, so comparing models is still the best way to do so. This article brings a heavyweight fight between two Japanese giants: Honda CR-V vs Toyota RAV4.

The 2024 Honda CR-V has been named one of the 10 Best Trucks and SUVs by Car and Driver, while the 2023 Toyota RAV4 scored five stars from the U.S. National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) for Overall Safety and was the Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2024 lineup keeps mostly the same recipe, with only a few aesthetic changes, like new colours. Which one is the best for you? Read our comparison and make up your mind.

Trim Level Comparison

Vehicle Price Range* Available Trims
Honda CR-V $37,259* to $51,909* 6
Toyota RAV4 $36,434* to $50,234.58* 16

The CR-V has two engines: a 1.5L turbocharged gas engine and a 2.0L 16-valve hybrid engine. The RAV4 lineup has 16 models and three engines: a 2.5L Dynamic Force 4-cylinder (gas and hybrid versions) and a plug-in hybrid 2.5L four-cylinder Atkinson.

Performance

Honda’s gas engine has 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque capacity. The hybrid version has 204 combined horsepower and a combined torque capacity of 247 lb-ft. The combined fuel efficiency of the gas engine ranges between 7.8 L / 100 km and 8.4 L / 100 km, while the hybrid models deliver a combined fuel efficiency of 6.4 L / 100 km.

Toyota’s gas engine has similar combined figures when it comes to fuel efficiency, ranging between 7.9 L / 100 km and 8.4 L / 100 km. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions have a combined fuel efficiency of 6.0 L / 100 km in all models. Gas models have 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, while hybrid models have 219 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, the plug-in hybrid engine has 302 horsepower, but they haven’t disclosed the torque capacity.

Exterior Features

Toyota and Honda never fail to create striking looks for their vehicles. The CR-V has a honeycomb front grille, which can be painted in matte black for the entry-level trim and piano/gloss black for the rest of the lineup. The EX-L Hybrid and Touring Hybrid trims are the only models with chrome exhaust finishes. There’s a one-touch moonroof for the Sport and higher models, while LED headlights are standard across the lineup.

Nearly all RAV4 models have LED headlights and a moonroof, except for the entry-level trim, the LE. The XLE and Trail trims have LED fog lamps and bridge-type roof rails, while the Hybrid Woodland Edition has a trail-style roof rail. A new exterior colour, Army Green, is also available for the Trail and Hybrid Woodland Edition trims.

Interior comfort and cargo space

Interior

Both vehicles can seat up to five passengers. The CR-V has a dual-zone air conditioning system for all trims, which is also available in all of the RAV4 trims except for the base model. Honda has fabric and leather-trimmed seats, while Toyota offers fabric or Softex seatings with different stitching styles. Heated front seats are standard for both lineups.

Both models have foldable rear seats for expanded cargo capacity. Toyota’s Woodland Edition can handle extra cargo with its Activity Mount feature. Meanwhile, the CR-V can store up to 29 suitcases if the rear seats are folded.

Technology and Safety

Honda’s LX-B models have a 7-inch touchscreen display with four or six speakers, depending on the trim. The flagship model has a 9-inch touchscreen display and a Bose Premium sound system with 12 speakers. Toyota’s touchscreen displays range between 8 and 12.3 inches. Upper models come with a JBL Clari-Fi audio system with 11 speakers.

Safety features are impressive on both lineups. The CR-V has a long list of active safety features, including collision mitigation, forward collision warning, hill start assist, hill descent control, and lane departure warning. Toyota has included the Toyota Star Safety system for all trims. The RAV4’s standard safety features include an engine immobilizer, a blindspot monitoring system, and a backup camera. Both lineups have advanced airbag systems.
